Reverse engineering & suddenly bam

Over the last few months I’ve been suffering with some yet unknown to me and my GP stomach ailment. On the back of this uncomfortable discovery, and with the aim of trying to find out whether my diet is behind the problem I did 3 things:

1 – I’ve reduced the quantity of foods I eat, using smaller plates, smaller portions

2 – once again hugely increased the quantity of veg in my diet, to the point of turning vegetarian

3 – reversed my meals once again, just like I did during pandemic – going for big brunches and tiny dinners. You know that old adage – breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen and dinner like a pauper.

The result – well, my stomach ailment hasn’t dissipated, so that’s something that will continue to be investigated. Still no idea – is it too much food, wrong kinda of food, or something else.

On the other hand, having struggled for the last 2 years or so, to regain (or re-lose), the weight I lost during pandemic and gained it back again – I have actually managed to shed a few pounds. Initially so much so that I started to worry there was something else wrong with me. Got past that worry quickly enough by having a major food binge session one evening (lol). Finally however, after months and months of trying to get back into my previous discipline I have cracked it. And will celebrate that for whoever long it lasts. I am not yet back down to my bottom pandemic weight, but I am closer now than I was 3 months ago. Obviously the considerable reduction of sugar and chocolate in my diet has had a massive impact. I still don’t know how to give up sugar completely – what I have done is replaced high quality, rich chocolate, with lower alternatives – things like wafers with chocolate in them, as the calorie content is so much lower.

Most important change has been reverse engineering my meals once again. Once again having a roast for breakfast, not for dinner. And having only light dinner – bowl of fruit with cream, or cereal, or light salad. I have written it previously, and I say it to anyone that will listen – what is the point of filling yourself up with hundreds/thousands of calories in the evening, when you’re about to go to bed and will not work off all that food.

It’s unfortunate that we’ve been so pre-conditioned from birth, through societal norms and conventions, and peer pressure – about what constitutes breakfast. If we can break through those norms, I personally believe many of us can revise our relationship with food, and eat healthier. That 30gram bowl of cornflakes in the morning is never going to keep you going all day long. The roast turkey with all the trimmings on the hand, absolutely will. Why not even have a pudding after – you have a long whole day to work off all that food.
