Christmas Cake

January something 2024

Well, it looks like I’m finally getting back to my old(ish) health and wellbeing habits – exercise, and sensible eating. It’s only taken me a year or so – and for the life of me, I’m struggling to understand why it’s taken such a long time, but I’m getting there. I said to a friend of mine the other day – that it’s funny, even though we can see the weight gain, we know we’ve done it before (losing the pounds that is, and exercising), yet once we get out of the regular discipline, it seems so difficult to get back in there.

I’m currently half way back up to my pre-pandemic weight. Last year, it’s just been one gain after another, which I’ve not been able to shift back off. This Christmas I’ve splurged on so much food, I’ve made, baked and created cakes – for no other reason than I simply wanted to. As a result, 3 weeks later and I still have half of Christmas cake left in the house. That thing is lace with so much alcohol it’s probably preserved enough to last until next Christmas! But it is delicious though.

Since Christmas, as the fridge, freezer and pantry have been slowly emptied of food, cakes and preserves, all are being restocked with healthier, better, lower calmer options. More fruit and veg options. Big dinners are being replaced with lighter salads and soups. Breakfasts are once again absolute feasts.

I really don’t understand, how a bowl of cornflakes is meant to sustain anyone until lunchtime. It’s hardly any food at all. Big breakfasts, to set you up for the day full of activity – whatever activity it might be – are the way to go.

You don’t need a big meal, 2 hours before you go to sleep. You’ll never burn that off.

Anyway – my food is almost back in order – by that I mean, all the naughty stuff almost gone; and my exercise – well, it’s not completely back up to scratch, but there has been a marked improved. Crucially I have a found a way to do some exercises, whilst playing with my dog – 2 for the price of one, really. In this case, I don’t mean a simple walk – but of all exercises SQUATS. I think the ability to combine the 2 activities into one is making a really big difference – both for me and the dog. And the exercise goes like this – I throw the ball, fuzzball brings it back to my feet, I squat to pick up the ball, then stand up. And so on and so forth, up to a 100 times! Okay, so far I’ve only managed 90 and could barely walk the next day.

My next goal is to find a way to incorporate puppy play time, into doing some lounges.

Little wins. Little wins.

BTW. celebrating 4 years of the blog!
