Travel days are not good food days.
No. Not good at all – especially when you travel long-haul, and particularly if there is a lay-over involved. On a travel day, I feel like I’m going from one meal to another. I’m hungry when I get to the airport, so I eat.
- As soon as you board the plane, they feed you.
- Before you get off, they give you a snack.
- I get off the plane, I’m peckish.
- Lay over is 2.5 hours, I’m still peckish, I eat more.
- I board the 2nd plane, an hour into the flight – they feed you again.
- I get off the plane, I’m hungry.
It feels like I’ve consumed about a week’s worth of meals in one 24 hour stint.
And most of it, is not exactly healthy – after all I’m on holidays, so airport meals usually mean the likes of Wagamama with all the trimmings and fried gyoza’s I can lay my hands on; or massive burgers and fries. There’s always a desert of some overly sugary chocolate brownie variety; extra large, extra syruppy coffees. And there are the obligatory snacks I have to purchase for the flights, you know, just in case. At least these days I buy a bottle of water, instead of a bottle of coke; but you get the picture….it’s a never ending story (ha, never ending story) of food, food, and more food.
The saving grace of a travel day or travel 24 hours – is that it is just 24 hours, and providing I’ve been good before and I will be good after, this 24 hour blip, is just that a blip. But I hate the fact that I can’t seem to control myself on a travel day. I was like that since childhood – and worse. When my gran used to take me with her, to the back-garden on our farm, and I do literally mean about 100 metres from the front door – she would have sandwiches and snacks packed for me for the journey. It was travel time – food was required. LOL. Happy memories. Maybe that’s why I always eat when I travel – I’ve been conditioned so since childhood.
But….. I do not worry. It’s not like I travel all the time – and the rest is fun, and actually, the food is part of the fun too when it’s a holiday travel. So for a few days, who cares……
