“D’Artagnan remained all day in his quarters, assigning as a reason to himself that the weather was bad.”
Three Musketeers, A. Dumas
9th Feb
Not cycling today. Opened my eyes at 10am – nothing at all to do with me watching Chinese dramas on Netflix until 2am, nope. Naturally this was going to delay my training today. Bad excuse. See what I mean though, I’m waning in my resolve already to keep disciplined and do training sessions each Sunday, as per the fitness guide from Exodus. On top of which my alarm clock didn’t go off this morning. I don’t know why I would have turned off my weekend alarm. I can’t remember when I switched it off, either. Need to fix that.
All that said, however, have you seen the weather outside today. No way was I gonna cycle in that! The little breeze that was around last week added an additional level of resistance to the training as it was. Can you imagine the level of resistance training today, when it’s blowing gale force winds out there. That would really push my little leggsies to the edge.
I will have to make up for it during the week though. No excuses. This week is going to be so hard.
So I go from feeling like I can do more cycling and eager to be getting on a bike, to being happy that I don’t have to do, and looking for excuses not to. Not a good exercise week.
In a meantime, I need to catch-up with posting my diary entries online. I’m writing this one in Feb, but I haven’t yet fully posted all my January “report cards”.
Monday
I was going to cycle. Really I was. Then I left the office and it started to rain. So………………….. Yeah, no, didn’t happen.
Tuesday.
I cycled! I cycled. Yey.
Seriously, every time I get myself on that bike and do a little cycle session, it’s like a mini victory. It’s even more of a victory if I do an extra loop or two around Hyde Park, which turns a 5km journey home, into a 11.07km training session. But I’m nowhere near making this cycling malarkey just a normal part of my existence.
A colleague at work today, offered to take me round Boxhill when the whether gets nicer, so I can get some proper training in, on something other than flat ground (not that I consider Horse Guard Barracks Bitch Hill flat ground!)
11:44pm
I’m sooooooo hungry. I had massive portion of noodles for dinner, brioche bun, grapefruit, whole papaya, half a bagel with brie. All of that between 8pm and now, and I’m still so hungry. I’m going to have to have another snack, otherwise it’ll take me forever to get to sleep.
Wednesday
Guess what? Cycled again. I know. Surprised myself. However as I left the office after work, it seemed to be a little less chilly and less windy than the day before, so I thought – why not. And why not.
15.4kms doing loops around Hyde Park, then down towards Chelsea – only because I knew there was an M&S there open late enough, so I could pop in and get some dinner. Well, if the excuse works, why not. Besides it was an opportunity to check out a couple of little streets leading from South Kensington to Kings Road to see how quiet these were for cyclists.
Plus, it wasn’t so windy, so I didn’t mind the few extra kilometres. Night before, cycling past the lake at Hyde Park – flipping heck, it might have just been a little bit of a breeze, but it’s surprising how much extra resistance that adds to cycling. It was really hard going at times. By comparison Wednesday’s session was a breeze.
Back at home, I ensured to have my dinner a bit later – around 9pm. Otherwise come 11pm I was sure to be hungry again! Can’t keep snacking at midnight just because of a little cycling session.
Although, I did follow up the chowder from M&S, with a little brioche bun with some home-made marmalade. Weeeeeeeelllllll, I’m not quite used to all that exercising and not overeating. I’m tryyyyyyying – but it’s so hard!
Thursday.
No pain. Nope. Bum ok, arms ok, shoulders ok. I’m ok.
No cycling tonight though. Lobster roll, chips, black tea with brandy – instead. I’ve got the sniffles and beginnings of a sore throat. Hence the brandy in the tea. Trying to stifle the sniffles before they turn into something really nasty. Can’t have that. I’m going away next weekend – can’t be ill for that. Plus, just can’t be ill. Hate it. I’m a miserable, whiney, whingey so-and-so when I’m ill. So much so that I drive myself annoyed. During the last chest infection, I discovered that sleeping with a hot-water bottle attached to the top of my chest, greatly relieved the symptoms and helped to get over the illness quickly.
Word of caution – in case you decide to use my tip – my hot-water bottle is wrapped inside a soft teddy-bear cover, so it’s not exposed, hence protecting me from any third degree burns. If you’re using uncovered hot-water bottle – don’t do it! Could end up in disaster. I’ve heard of plenty of cases, where people suffered 3rd degree burns from using hot-water bottles which are unwrapped, or from tops opening.
Anyhow, that’s what I’m going to do tonight. Seeing friends tomorrow after work, then away next weekend. I’ve no time to be sick.
Plus I’m hoping to do some serious cycling on Sunday. Although – that might not happen. Have seen the whether forecast. Not a habit I’m used to, but I checked. It’s supposed to rain and gale again. I believe there’s another storm coming.
